Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, and why we need fiction, in a in a riff about investment and resonance.

This is one of my favorite subjects of all--if you feel like discussing any of it, please jump in, either here or there.

There's an author whose stuff has pretty much always appealed to me, with a couple of exceptions (though those I admired if I didn't enjoy) so when an ARC hit my desk for consideration for this year's Norton Award (the book comes out before December), woohoo, was I excited.

When I look at my LJ entries, there’s an eyebrow-lifting bump in the number of comments on the slash entries. I know most of those people will never return-unless, of course, a sentry on the hill above the slash community signals that they are under discussion again. Yeah, I know this subject has come up before, but (at least for me) in a slightly different form. Maybe it’s just tedious for others, which is why I will cut after this sentence, but I at least find I need to look at certain topics from as many angles as I can to try to comprehend them-and then maybe use whatever it is I think I’ve learned.
